This is Steve. A calm, considered and deeply dedicated breast and thyroid surgeon.
Steve is passionate about providing tailored, evidence-based surgical care, firmly believing there’s no place for a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Particularly when it comes to breast cancer. He takes the time to understand each patient’s individual needs and circumstances, carefully weaving their wishes together with his expert advice to arrive at the right treatment for them. It’s an approach matched by a gentle, compassionate manner that offers patients and their families genuine support through what can be one of the most difficult journeys of their lives.
A doctor for over 15 years, Steve was drawn to cancer care early in his career. One of his first roles was in a chemotherapy formulation suite, work that took him overseas to the UK and centred largely on breast cancer patients. He found it deeply rewarding, and was inspired by how many of the era’s breakthroughs in cancer therapy were emerging within the breast cancer field. He went on to find a natural home in surgery, a craft he finds timeless given human anatomy doesn’t change much over time. Cancer therapy, by contrast, evolves at pace. For Steve, it’s simply essential to stay current with the latest treatments and to know how best to apply them for each patient.
Steve also brings five years of post-fellowship experience across both emergency general surgery and breast and endocrine surgery. He completed his breast and endocrine fellowships within the high-volume unit at the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network, as well as at the Royal Hobart Hospital, contributing to Hobart’s BreastScreen roster while he was there. Steve has since held consultant surgeon roles across both Central and Northern Adelaide health networks. His extensive research portfolio includes a completed Master of Surgery and an ongoing PhD investigating male breast cancer at the University of Adelaide.
Of his many achievements, Steve is especially proud of helping establish a surgical outreach service to Port Pirie Hospital in 2021. It was his first consultant role and one that called for considerable autonomy and responsibility.
Family is central to most of what Steve does outside of work, much of it spent ferrying his kids to soccer, footy and netball. A keen follower of the AFL and English Premier League, he’s equally happy tinkering on projects in the garage. His ideal day off would be a rare slow start, strong coffee in hand, before a gentle drive through the Adelaide Hills with the family, stopping at a pub or winery for some good local food. And you might be surprised to learn that Steve is a collector of AutoArt diecast model cars. He says this is the next best thing to collecting all the cars he loves in full size.
